Frequently Asked Questions
What is a wound vac?
A wound vac—also called a negative pressure wound pump—uses gentle suction to help wounds heal faster. It pulls out fluid and infection-causing material, improves blood flow, and helps close the wound. The system includes a sealed dressing, tubing, and a small vacuum pump that collects drainage in a canister. It’s commonly used for surgical wounds, pressure injuries, diabetic ulcers, and other slow-healing wounds.—uses gentle suction to help wounds heal faster. Who can benefit from a wound vac?
Wound vacs are often recommended for people with slow-healing or complex wounds—like surgical incisions that reopened, pressure injuries (bedsores), diabetic foot ulcers, or wounds with heavy drainage. They may also be used after skin grafts or flap surgery to support healing. Your doctor or wound care team will decide if it’s the right option for you.
Can I purchase wound care dressings out of pocket?
Yes, however, some products do require a prescription, even if you want to pay out of pocket.
An HME staff member can inform you which products require an RX.
